In the summer of 2018, the artists took a walk through the Maltese landscape, documenting the night, the sounds and the presence of distant others.
The title of the resulting film and exhibition; Some Kind of Search, is their first collaboration and loosely references elements of Bas Jan Ader’s In Search of the Miraculous (One night in Los Angeles). The film formed a starting point for a discussion on potential overlaps in their respective practices.
Lisa Penny explores the cultural currency of clothing and fashion. Through the expanded field of painting, items of the everyday, (a towel, a sweatshirt or a baseball cap) are brought into a dialogue with elements of figuration and abstraction, embedding the body and movement into painting. Recent Projects include Friends and Neighbours at kunstraum, London, and 40 Days of May, Jiwar Residency, Barcelona.
Jenny Baines works predominantly with analogue film considering the sculptural and performative qualities of the material and its apparatus. She performs repeated, often absurd actions for the camera, pushing the limitations of the mechanism and her own physical endurance. Recent projects include: Field & Frame, Mono No Aware, New York; Muscle Memory, Kunstraum Bethanien, Berlin; Action Films, Museum of Modern Art, Rio,
Andrew Vallance contributes a reflective text in response to the film. Based in London, Andrew is a filmmaker, writer, and curator.
