A glimpse of the Velodrome in the making - oil on canvas
My paintings are lit by my curiosity and love of colour, light and shape.
In the winter months I like to focus on painting interiors and love the diffused light and empty spaces. I find open doorways leading to another space that lead one to imagine what is not always fully seen. There is a quiet stillness where people have left a space and their treasures and belongings tell a story. I continue to paint landscapes and cityscapes throughout the year and the changing horizons in London I find very exciting.
I have worked in conservation of oil paintings on canvas, wooden panel and copper; from Old Masters through to Impressionist, Post Impressionist and contemporary paintings. Consequently I have learnt in depth about painting supports and the effects of different grounds on the painting surface. I use gesso sometimes as a primer on panel to achieve a translucency, or I use rabbit skin glue on raw canvas to give a porous neutral tone to a subject. I also paint on an oil ground to give a smooth paint surface – conducive to working fluidly – ‘ wet on wet’. Drawing is a vital part of my work and the mixing of colours has become instinctive.
