Anja Borowicz is a London-based artist, collaborator and researcher whose practice moves between sculpture, sound, text, drawing, participatory situations and digital or immersive technologies. BAGT lists her as an artist at Blackhorse Lane Studios, 114a Blackhorse Lane, London E17 6AA.
Born in Gdańsk, Borowicz initially trained as an engineer before turning to fine art, a trajectory that continues to inform her interest in systems, material processes, bodily engagement and the aesthetics of experience. Her own artist statement describes a practice working “across clay, canvas, sound and immersive technologies,” staging encounters between bodies and materials and asking how different ways of sensing and experiencing the world can be made visible, audible or tactile.
Borowicz’s work is grounded in the idea of object-gesture: the moment in which a body and an object meet through action. Her PhD research at the Royal College of Art, Sculpting with object-gestures: An everyday working gesture as an artistic proposition and a space to reimagine material resonances, reframed everyday working gestures as sculptural propositions, connecting materiality, labour, embodiment, sound, cognitive semiotics and neuroscience.
Her installations and workshops often use recorded gestures, instructional language, sound, shadow, movement and participatory methods. Through projects such as Gesture Labs, she invites audiences to respond physically to visual, aural and textual material associated with body labour, extending sculpture into a space of research, empathy, mirroring and embodied cognition.
