Selected by Tam Joseph and Keith Piper
Tam Joseph born in Dominica in 1947 is without doubt an accomplished painter, illustrator, graphic artist, printmaker and sculptor. Joseph came to London at the age of eight and studied the Foundation Course at the Central School of Art London in 1967, followed by the BA in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art but quit the Course after a few months and began his 1960’s whirlwind nomadic tour of Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan Pakistan & India. 20 years later he continued his journey of instruction and discovery in Africa where he has visited, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo and Senegal. The eclectic spirit of the Bohemian has played a definitive role in Joseph’s multifaceted exploration of contemporary realities, exploring the many inspirations, aspirations, and contradictions that shape those realities. Joseph’s work is often figurative, personal, ephemeral and idiosyncratic, with a surrealistic take on life as he sees it.
Tam Joseph's studio is based in London and he has been engaged in active studio practice since the 1980’s and has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Joseph’s works are in many corporate collections, including the Arts Council and images of his works have been reproduced by diverse publications including Harpers Magazine, Blood Axe Books and 20th Century Painters and Sculptors (Thames and Hudson, 1990) Shoukadoh Bookstore Kyoto, Japan.

Keith Piper is a Black British artist, curator, researcher and academic.
His creative practice responds to specific issues, historical relationships and geographical sites. He has exhibited work national and internationally.
In the early 1980s, Piper was a founder member of the ‘Blk Art Group’ an association of young artists of African Caribbean descent, based in the West Midlands.
During this period, he established a research driven approach to art practice, prioritising thematic exploration over an attachment to any particular media. His work has ranged from painting, through photography and installation to a use of digital media, video and computer-based interactivity.
Keith Piper is the present Professor of Fine Art at Middlesex University. London
