Timothy Hyman RA was best known for his narrative paintings set against the backdrop of London. Through his work, he explored his personal relationship with the city where he lived and worked, both real and mythological. His paintings often featured visions of himself and his wife, the late author Judith Ravenscroft.
Timothy Hyman exhibited widely in the UK, Italy, and India. In 2007, he was awarded the National Portrait Gallery Travel Award. He was a figurative painter, lecturer, curator, and art historian, and was widely respected as an authority on Sienese painting and the work of Pierre Bonnard. He published acclaimed monographs on both subjects. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1963 to 1967.
Timothy Hyman joined BAGT in 1972. He died on 7 September 2024.
